Well hello there. It’s been quite a while since I’ve been able to post here, and I think the title of this post says it all. 2016 did quite a number on me, as it did many others from what I hear. Personally, politically, the whole thing was a bit of a mess. I mean, Alan Rickman died for goodness sakes!
I recently entered the Frankie Good Stuff Awards, a competition being run by frankie magazine to recognise creative folk in all sorts of areas, such as craft, music, writing and small business. I didn’t realise it when I started making my piece for the awards, but it turns out my feelings about 2016 have even permeated my weaving.
Below is my piece, which for the purposes of the competition is entitled ‘Good Riddance 2016’, but to be honest, in my head it’s called something a little saltier, which starts with ‘F’ and ends with ‘uck You 2016’.
As I said, it wasn’t really intentional when I started this piece, but the more I think about it, I can see that the right eye with the tear drop represents the fear, the sadness and fatigue of the past year. Who else just wanted to lie down, curl up in a ball and cuddle a dog until it was over? On the other hand, the bursts of colour remind me of the incredible and creative displays of love and community that have come out of the anger and frustration experienced the world over in 2016. Such as this amazing footage of the #ICan’tKeepQuiet choir that emerged after the Women’s Marches last weekend (click here). So I guess what I’m saying is that this weaving is my way of protesting Trump with textiles. No, of course not, I’m joking…or am I? (*quietly imagines poking Trump in the eye with a tapestry needle*).
The left eye is wide open, ready to tackle 2017 head on, and determined to make something good out of it.
Phew. That’s a lot of feelings for one tapestry. Anyway, it’s good to be back in blog-land, and I hope to be bringing more creative chat to this space soon.
How was your 2016? Did something good happen in your life? I would love to know! Or if it was similarly terrible, feel free to have a whinge in the comments and we can all share cute puppy pictures to feel better. Have you entered the Frankie Good Stuff Awards? I can’t wait to see all the creative amazingness the awards will uncover!
